Miriam Cabessa: Shapeshift
October 10 – December 17, 2018
Jenn Singer Gallery presents Miriam Cabessa: Shapeshift, a solo exhibition of oil paintings and textile by Miriam Cabessa, internationally recognized since 1997 when she represented Israel at the Venice Biennale.
Using a unique sensory-based painting technique, Miriam Cabessa deftly works her body through her oils in a visually engaging improvisational performance, as much at home on a stage with a viewing audience as it is in isolation in the painter’s studio.
Abstaining from using brushes, Miriam Cabessa’s language of movement is highly gestural, an additive and reductive dance with the oils to create otherworldly abstractions.
Each painting contains a ritual. Cabessa surrenders to chance and emotion, allowing a libidinal, organic quality to instinctively emerge as she kneads, caresses and crawls onto the paintings. They are birthed through her simply allowing them to be.
Incorporated into the exhibition is Cabessa’s first work translated into textile – a limited edition silk rug, handmade in Nepal, which beautifully embodies the movement, texture and magical quality of the artist’s work. It is a carpet one could truly imagine taking flight.
