Paul Edmondson: BOOK/MARKS
A Nostalgic Homage to the Analog Age
Jenn Singer is pleased to announce the release of contemporary fine art photographer Paul Edmondson’s new limited edition series, BOOK/MARKS.
Edmondson, known for his evocative landscape photography of the American West, began this new body of work after finding himself captivated by row after row of periodicals in the archives of his local library. In the new collection of photographs on archival paper, the Seattle-based photographer’s expert eye captures the tactile soul of a world before digital dominance and offers viewers a journey full of sense memory so vivid that we can almost smell the must and musk of aged paper and feel the textures of the weathered cloth book covers beneath one's fingertips.
"Although it may not be immediately apparent, this body of work echoes the central themes of my landscape photography, illustrating how human interaction gradually transforms the world," says Edmondson. "The books and periodicals, once uniform in their machine-printed perfection, acquire uniqueness and character through the marks left by their readers."
Paul Edmondson’s BOOK/MARKS collection delves into the aesthetic of an analog life, celebrating the marks left by readers over time. From folded corners to coffee stains, each photograph narrates a unique story, resonating with a sense of nostalgia that is palpable and deeply moving. As the artist himself states, these are not mere images but "homages to these humble carriers of knowledge" that reflect human interactions and the indelible impressions they leave.
Every artwork in BOOK/MARKS is a poignant reminder of the community and culture fostered by shared interests in literature and the written word. The richly detailed photographs serve as a canvas where the titles of past publications like “Printers' Ink,” “Electric Railway Review,” and “Country Gentleman” echo the voices of a previous era.
BOOK/MARKS is more than an artistic venture; it is an invitation to reconnect with a form of media that is in danger of becoming a relic of the past. It is a bridge between the digital and analog worlds and a respite for the nostalgic heart.
