Al Luke, a.k.a. ALFA, is a contemporary artist based in Cape Town, South Africa whose work combines vibrant, graphic, large-scale abstract expressionist representations with profound African and modern art influences. Luke’s paintings and public installations encapsulate the rhythm of life, weaving a rich tapestry of interconnected patterns that draw from deep-rooted African traditions and contemporary aesthetics.
While Al Luke’s artwork captures the essence of societal connections between humanity, he also delves into the intricate interplay between science, biology, and mathematics. His expressive abstract style serves as a medium for visually translating these vast themes. Throughout his artistic journey, he has employed diverse media, with a current predilection for acrylic liners and spray paint. Passionate about reshaping global perceptions of African art, ALFA strives to introduce and champion a distinctive African style that pushes boundaries and challenges established norms.
Often commissioned for large-scale works, street art and public installations, Al Luke’s impactful presence can be witnessed in spaces that transcend the confines of a traditional gallery. Alongside his work in contemporary art, Al Luke is the creative director at Blacksheep Design Studio, where he oversees projects for an array of local South African and international brands.
His academic journey began at The Frank Joubert Art Centre, followed by further studies in art and graphic design at Cape Technikon (CPUT), where he earned his National Diploma in graphic design.
Over the years, Luke has immersed himself in various creative arenas, honing his skills across multiple techniques and platforms. His diverse experiences in the advertising industry further enrich his multifaceted approach to art and design.
Al Luke's work has been exhibited throughout South Africa, in Amsterdam and at SCOPE Art Fair with Jenn Singer Gallery. The artist’s work is held in international private collections.
My intention is to create and expose a new African style which challenges the definitive global views and opinions of the continent.
As with many creative individuals, my journey into the arts began at home, influenced by a free-spirited mother and a father who thrived on order and structure, stemming from his background in traditional carpentry.
I quickly grasped that a firm understanding of structure and a deep familiarity with my tools would grant me the freedom to create confidently and fuel my perpetual search for more.
Despite my extensive background in art and design, I've always been driven to evolve, continuously seeking to carve out a distinctive creative aesthetic.
My artwork embodies an expressive abstract style, aimed at visually translating personal and societal behaviors and connections. I strive to craft pieces that are meticulously considered, teeming with intriguing details rather than emphasizing a solitary focal point. Over the years, I've delved into this style using a variety of mediums, with my current preference leaning towards spray paint, acrylic paint, and liners.
