Artist Statement
The hustle and bustle of work and family life has created a constant distraction of commutes, meetings, problems to solve and ending the day with some good TV before bed. Since the emergence of Covid-19 and lockdowns all around the world, we have been gifted with free time since meetings, shopping, gatherings have all gone online and the daily commute is no more. For those of us not deemed essential workers, all this free time has allowed us time to reflect on the lives we lead, what we value and has highlighted so many unacceptable realities. Collectively, we have noticed human rights abuses in our communities and abroad and the citizens of the world are no longer willing to accept a sub-par existence. With the rise of ‘Black Lives Matter’ ‘Gender-Based Violence’ or ‘Police Brutality’ protests on every continent, it’s become evident that these are polarizing issues. Our increased division and the need to choose sides has led to the belief that everyone on a side must agree on everything, which is rarely the case. It’s within this context that I’ve created Homogeneous and Heterogeneous artworks. From the outside it all looks the same and cohesive but in reality, there are nuances and various levels of experience and understanding to every debate. These pieces highlight the importance of the individual within the group that informs the narrative and pushes the group to evolve and transform. -Faatimah Mohamed-Luke
