Artwork Insights:
“Dragon George refers to an orthodox medieval icon with St. George and the dragon from Crete. In my childhood home had been a wooden old sculpture of St. George which fascinated me. The dragon looked up to the man who looked into a distance. I never liked the idea of the dragon being killed. As the dragon isn’t actually killed, but is threatened. It’s more about a suspension, an open question how to get on with the dragon. When I did some research on it, I found that the earliest picture of this motif is the slaying of Tiamat, the Babylonian feminine serpent/dragon. I wanted to develop a positive image, a celebration of meeting this force.” - Marius von Brasch
